I Generated a Song With Google\u2019s New Music Model and I Kind of Like It"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Back in February, Google acquired a music generator startup called Producer.\u00a0In April, Google rebranded Producer, turning it into Google Flow Music. That product has been available as part of the Google Labs suite. But, as is usually the case with such experiments, Google Flow Music hasn\u2019t really set the world on fire with its popularity\u2014even at a time when music generators like Suno have, for better or worse, made headlines.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/longhaulmovingpros.com\/?p=1134\">EU Will Reportedly Label ChatGPT and Roblox \u2018Very Large Online Platforms\u2019 (Derogatory)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But Google\u2019s new music model, Lyria 3.5, has just been made available through Google Flow Music. In a blog post on Wednesday, Google wrote that the Lyria 3.5 boasts, \u201cricher, more complex melodic structures that sound more natural,\u201d as well as lyrics that are supposed to adhere better to user prompts, and have better attentiveness to song structure. The vocals are supposed to be more expressive and \u201cemotionally nuanced.\u201d Users also get more control over the absolute bedrock basics of song creation: tempo and song length.<\/p>\n<p>As if to prove its point, the blog post comes with an embed of a YouTube video featuring an unnamed song in the genre I call Taco Bell pop. Y\u2019know, the kind of not-quite-good-enough-to-be-on-the-radio pop you hear in Taco Bell, and see affiliated with Taco Bell, and which makes you feel like you\u2019ve just consumed Taco Bell for your ears? Everyone calls it that, right? The song is pleasant and the lyrics are about spinning around:<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div><noscript><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"281\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WQkg3n5bwKQ?feature=oembed\" title=\"Introducing Lyria 3.5 now available in Google Flow Music\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p>But I already know I never want to hear this slop song again. However, the same can\u2019t be said for the song I prompted into existence when I signed up for the service, which Google Flow Music named \u201cThe Cartographer\u2019s Lung.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>(Note: The image below is not a clickable link. Click here to listen to \u201cThe Cartographer\u2019s Lung\u201d)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Cartographer\u2019s Lung\u201d was an accident. When you sign up for Google Flow Music and log in, it presents you with a chatbot interface and the bot says: \u201cWelcome to the Studio! I\u2019m your Producer\u2014-looking forward to making music together. Let\u2019s lay down a beat or instrumental to get started. What have you been listening to recently?\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>I didn\u2019t think answering this question was going to be a complete prompt for a song, so I tried to answer it honestly, telling it I had been listening to a lot of Black Midi lately. However, I figured it would probably not want to be steered toward imitating a specific band for copyright reasons, so I just wrote a long, rambling description of Black Midi (partially cribbed from Wikipedia) without actually mentioning Black Midi. My description is horrible writing so pretend you never saw this:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cI have been listening to rock that incorporates styles such as math rock, progressive rock, post-punk, and avant-jazz that is part of the \u201cWindmill scene,\u201d particularly the bands influenced by <\/em>[blah blah blah, cutting most of this] <em>which tends to have many, many words\u2014often spoken very quickly, but sometimes slowly\u2014telling an often disjointed, and often disturbing story.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/longhaulmovingpros.com\/?p=1132\">Meta Struggles With Limited Returns on Its AI Spending, Social Media Legal Woes<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I thought Google Flow Music was going to lay down a drum track or something, but instead it used <em>that entire chunk of text<\/em> as my prompt and created a whole song, then gave me options for refining it, which I never got around to doing.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the link to \u201cThe Cartographer\u2019s Lung\u201d again. It\u2019s an F-minus-minus at sounding like Black Midi, which sounds like this (frankly, I\u2019m sorry I brought Black Midi into this), but it does sound a little like the early oughts band the Starlight Mints, or it sounds like someone trying to make fun of the Starlight Mints.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s a very bad song. The lyrics include lines like, \u201cThe map says turn at the third spleen \/ But here is only a field of rusted nails \/ The compass needle points directly down \/ Into the black lard of the soil,\u201d which sound like one of the Mars Volta\u2019s castoffs. It pronounces the word cathedral \u201cCathy-drull.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But I like this terrible song. It reminds me of 2022, when AI products like this were wild and unpredictable. And fun.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been four years since then, and AI-generated music gets slipped into streaming services now because it\u2019s so safe and hard to notice. People generate it as a sort of get-rich-quick scheme, or convince other people they\u2019re authorities and try to become AI-content-generating gurus as a get-rich-quick scheme. The slop landscape is depressing and hollow.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>And unfortunately there\u2019s no magical map that can get us back to the AI of 2022.
