According to the latest earnings report from EssilorLuxottica, the owner of Ray-Ban and co-maker of Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses, revenue from its smart glasses nearly doubled in the second quarter compared to the same period last year.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/longhaulmovingpros.com\/?p=1139\">2027 Will Be Xbox\u2019s Make-or-Break Moment as Hardware Prices Soar<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The company didn\u2019t disclose how many units have been sold in the second quarter of this year, but the smart glasses revenue growth is significant, especially considering overall revenue is down over the same period.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s most surprising about the uptick isn\u2019t that smart glasses are relatively popular\u2014Meta sold 7 million pairs of Ray-Ban-branded AI glasses in 2025\u2014but that they\u2019re popular despite an increasingly prickly climate surrounding the category. Meta, in particular, has been the focus of a lot of backlash in the past year, and much of it has been well deserved.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>On top of smart glasses generally being misused by people to encroach on people\u2019s privacy and cheat\u2014that includes at least one case of extortion, people using smart glasses in court, and someone in South Korea being criminally charged after using a pair to cheat on a state safety exam\u2014Meta has also crossed privacy boundaries of the people using its glasses.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/longhaulmovingpros.com\/?p=1138\">Will We Ever Solve the Problem of Losing Data?<\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Earlier this year, Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet uncovered\u00a0that human contractors for Meta were exposed to all kinds of sensitive content captured by the company\u2019s AI glasses, including people having sex, using the bathroom, and sensitive banking information. Meta uses some videos and pictures captured by its glasses\u2014specifically those captured with the \u201cHey Meta\u201d command\u2014to train AI. That practice is baked into its terms of service and hasn\u2019t been modified since.<\/p>\n<p>If that wasn\u2019t enough, Meta\u2019s reported plans to introduce facial recognition technology have caught the attention of both federal lawmakers and privacy groups, and neither is jazzed about the idea. Oh, and pop star Lorde doesn\u2019t care for smart glasses, either.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Despite all of the pushback, the category seems to be growing, and with the entrance of Google and Samsung, it may balloon even further this year. That growth doesn\u2019t mean a tipping point isn\u2019t coming, though, especially as more restrictions and added social pressure kick in.
