But anecdotally, I don\u2019t hear people say things like \u201cjust ChatGPT it\u201d anymore.<\/p>\n<p>In March, OpenAI made a deal with the Pentagon at a time when its chief competitor, Anthropic, was noisily feuding with the Pentagon over that company\u2019s stance against autonomous killer robots and AI mass surveillance. Anthropic managed to become a sort of folk hero, even if that reputation was probably somewhat unearned.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Some AI users revolted in the wake of OpenAI\u2019s deal, which CEO Sam Altman acknowledged looked \u201copportunistic and sloppy.\u201d An anti-OpenAI organization called QuitGPT, which calls itself a \u201cgrassroots campaign by the people, for the people,\u201d formed. Its website claims that \u201cChatGPT took Trump\u2019s killer robot deal. It\u2019s time to Quit.\u201d That site says 4 million people have joined its boycott.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>And at the same time, OpenAI more broadly was in the midst of a wrenching and sudden shift in its self-image, from freewheeling and fun to\u2026whatever it is now. Anthropic\u2019s surge in revenue-generating enterprise customers had triggered a \u201ccode red\u201d in late 2025. By mid-March of 2026, OpenAI was reportedly changing its internal strategy to focus on enterprise and productivity. When an Anthropic Super Bowl commercial made fun of OpenAI for its ads, Sam Altman responded by getting embarrassingly testy in public.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In short, ChatGPT\u2019s loss of dominance arrived during a less-than-ideal year for its brand image\u2014although in the \u201cplus\u201d column, OpenAI won its legal war with Elon Musk, so its year hasn\u2019t been completely without high points.<\/p>\n<p>The market share of Anthropic\u2019s Claude, according to this report, is 10.3%\u2014nowhere near Gemini\u2019s 27.7%, let alone ChatGPT\u2019s 46.4%.
