If you are someone who enjoys smart glasses, you are going around the world wearing what 90s TV news shows used to call a \u201cspy camera\u201d\u2014a tool used by investigative reporters hoping to expose corruption and scams. But in all likelihood, all you\u2019re exposing with your smart glasses are strangers minding their own business, which is why there\u2019s an LED light that comes on when you record video or take a photo. Ah,<\/i> but what if you tamper with the LED<\/i>?<\/p>\n

In a statement to Gizmodo last year, a Meta representative said that if you cover your LED, \u201cyou\u2019ll be notified to clear it,\u201d and that the company has \u201cmade tangible improvements to bystander privacy with a larger and more noticeable LED and innovations such as tamper detection.\u201d<\/p>\n

But in terms of tamper detection, the main thing Meta had come up with was a light sensor to fix the famous tape-on-the-LED trick, and it wasn\u2019t all that effective if the user was determined to find a workaround.<\/p>\n

But that was just the beginning. Last month, tech reporter Joanna Stern found a cottage industry of people who perform surgery on Meta smart glasses to make them fully LED-free, and ready for covert spying.<\/p>\n

So, as noticed by the Verge\u2019s Victoria Song on Tuesday, Meta is now actually rolling out what it purports to be tamper-proofing for the privacy LED on its smart glasses above and beyond the light sensor safeguard. This is now spelled out on the smart glasses FAQ at FB.com:<\/p>\n

Since\u00a0the\u00a0introduction\u00a0of\u00a0this\u00a0safeguard,\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0seen\u00a0some\u00a0people\u00a0go\u00a0beyond\u00a0using\u00a0tape\u00a0to\u00a0sophisticated\u00a0efforts\u00a0to\u00a0modify\u00a0or\u00a0destroy\u00a0the\u00a0capture\u00a0LED.\u00a0We\u00a0are\u00a0continuously\u00a0improving\u00a0our\u00a0ability\u00a0to\u00a0detect\u00a0tampering,\u00a0and\u00a0now\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0updating\u00a0the\u00a0glasses\u00a0to\u00a0disable\u00a0the\u00a0camera\u00a0if\u00a0they\u00a0detect\u00a0the\u00a0LED\u00a0was\u00a0physically\u00a0tampered\u00a0with\u00a0or\u00a0destroyed.\u00a0No\u00a0other\u00a0kind\u00a0of\u00a0camera\u00a0has\u00a0done\u00a0this\u00a0and\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0proud\u00a0to\u00a0lead\u00a0the\u00a0industry\u00a0forward.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
