I know what you\u2019re thinking: <em>Hey, didn\u2019t the head of safety at OpenAI just leave?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/longhaulmovingpros.com\/?p=852\">The Public Got So Mad at Meta\u2019s New AI Photo Tool That It\u2019s Scrapped Already<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In fact, it feels like a head of safety at OpenAI is pretty much <i>always<\/i> leaving. Working in safety leadership\u2014loosely defined\u2014at OpenAI is a little like working as a drummer in the band Spinal Tap; lots of turnover. I\u2019m not the world\u2019s premier OpenAI Kremlinologist, so I might be missing some details and nuance, but here\u2019s my basic timeline:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jan Leike, who led OpenAI\u2019s Superalignment team, left in May of 2024<\/li>\n<li>With Leike\u2019s departure, the Superalignment team dissolved<\/li>\n<li>Miles Brundage, who led \u201cAGI readiness\u201d left in October of that same year<\/li>\n<li>Andrea Vallone, who led safety research related to mental health left a year after Brundage<\/li>\n<li>The \u201cMission Alignment\u201d team, which seems to have been the successor to the \u201cSuperalignment Team\u201d disbanded in February of 2026<\/li>\n<li>At that second dissolution, Mission Alignment ex-leader Josh Achiam became \u201cchief futurist\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Four days ago, Achiam resigned<\/li>\n<li>Now Heidecke is leaving<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to Wired, those previously reporting to Heidecke\u2019s safety teams will be led by Mia Glaese, who is a VP, and also the head of alignment. However, there does seem to be an other replacement for Heidecke, according to Wired. Saachi Jain, former leader of safety teams, will now be an \u201cinterim head of safety systems\u201d under Glaese.<\/p>\n<p>What exactly keeps happening inside OpenAI\u2019s offices is anyone\u2019s guess, but OpenAI research chief Mark Chen did at least give Wired a hint, saying, \u201cThe demands on safety continue to increase\u2014we are training models at a much faster cadence, and release cycles have come down greatly in turn,\u201d and added, \u201cAs a result, we have bigger coordination challenges around safety today than ever before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/longhaulmovingpros.com\/?p=851\">Narwal Freo Z10 Turbo Review: Midrange Vacuum, High-End Performance<\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The generous reading is that this is still an immature industry. The points along the chain where safety considerations are needed genuinely may keep jumping around as OpenAI figures out how best to build its products.
